Only two of the many holes in the bottom of this UST through which leakage occured.
The Oil Pollution and Hazardous Substances Control Act of 1978
requires the owner of any petroleum UST to immediately notify the State environmental authorities and take immediate action to abate the release and restore the affected area to prerelease conditions. This law was passed to "promote the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of this State by protecting the land and waters over which this State has jurisdiction from pollution by oil, oil products, oil by-products, and hazardous substances."
Although most home heating oil USTs are non-regulated, should leakage be discovered, the regulations protecting soil and groundwater will enforce the assessment and cleanup of the leakage.
To learn more about State regulations and policy, the following link will take you to the website of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR), Division of Waste Management (DWM). There, you can find answers to Frequently Asked Questions and learn more about Home Heating Oil USTs, Non-Regulated USTs, Leaking Petroleum Cleanup Funds, and Selecting an Environmental Consultant.
