Planning to sell your property?
Most buyers are savvy enough to investigate older properties for the presence of an underground storage tank (UST) and prior use of heating oil. In addition, most home inspectors will find the evidence of home heating oil usage during their inspection, which could delay closing, or even kill the sale. Therefore, if you know that you have a UST or AST, have a qualified individual check for leakage.
If you are looking at an older or rural property, call SSE for more information. The presence of a UST on a property does not have to be a hindrance to the purchase of the property. We may be able to provide a sensible solution to a potential problem.
SSE suggests that you do the following:
It is much better to deal with the removal, and cleanup if necessary, before you put the house on the market.
If you are not the original owner of the property and don't know if fuel oil was ever used, call the natural gas company and ask when the line was run to the house. If it was run after the house was built, then chances are that fuel oil was in use prior to natural gas. If propane or electric are currently in use, investigate when the heating system was installed, and if applicable, what system it replaced.
