SSE suggests that you do the following:

1. Determine the possibility of the presence of a UST by comparing the date the house was built to the date natural gas or current non-fuel oil heating system was installed. If the gas line or other heat system was installed after the house was built, then chances are fuel oil was in use.

2. If a UST is known to exist, or if one is suspected, call SSE to have a look.

3. Remove the UST or have it properly abandoned in-place by a licensed individual and company.

Removal, Assessment, & Cleanup
If you are planning to sell an older property (built prior to 1970), call SSE to learn whether or not there is a tank on the property, even if there is no evidence of fuel oil use. Many property owners are unaware of the UST on their property, having bought the property after the heating system was converted from fuel oil. I will discuss with you ALL the tank closure options, not just removal, so that you can make an informed decision.

$75 tank inspection (often no charge).

Before UST removal.
After UST removal.
Don't do the following:

1. Have the UST filled with sand, cement, or foam without first uncovering the tank and cutting it open for cleaning (all of the oil and sludge cannot be removed unless the tank is cut open; leakage is only a matter of time).

2. Allow anyone to investigate the possibility of leakage before establishing eligibility for Trust Fund reimbursement of the cleanup costs (finding leakage negates optional closure methods).

3. Try to remove the tank yourself (may disqualify you for Trust Fund assistance should leakage be discovered).
