How do I pay for the cleanup of leakage from my oil tank?
Cleanup of leakage from a UST requires heavy equipment, careful operation of the equipment, and stringent adherence to the State's guidelines. The assessment and cleanup costs can easily exceed $10,000, but for most residential releases, the cost of soil cleanup averages about $8,000.

If the property can't be remediated to the State's soil cleanup standards, or if bedrock or groundwater are encountered while digging, then an additional phase of work called the Limited Site Assessment (LSA) will be required. The LSA can add another $5,000 or more to the total cost of the project, but usually averages about $4,200 for residential releases.

The Trust Fund will usually cover 100% of these costs.
The UST must be less than 1,100 gallons in size.

Leakage must be documented by laboratory analysis.

Leakage must be reported to the State within 24 hours of discovery/confirmation.

The UST must be removed from the ground.

Reimbursement is made only to the tank owner:

The current property owner is eligible if the UST was last used on or after Nov. 8, 1984, even if they never used the tank.

Only the person who last used the UST is eligible if the tank was last used prior to Nov. 8, 1984.

If the last person/entity cannot be found to obtain power-of-attorney over the UST, then a $5,000 deductible with 90% assistance would be applicable.
