Most home heating oil USTs are non-regulated, which means that they do not have to be removed, unless leakage is discovered.
Removal of the UST and contaminated soils is required when leakage is discovered. We usually finish the tank removal, excavating activities, and backfilling and site restoration in one day. The contaminated soils are transported to a permitted disposal facility on the same day. We try to avoid disturbing the landscape as much as possible, but tank removal is a messy process (no complaints so far).
SSE's clients pay an average of about $2,000 to remove a leaking UST, and dispose of the tank and any fluids and sludge.

SSE does not own or maintain any excavation equipment, nor do we employ any equipment operators. With no overhead, and because we do not markup subcontracted work as many consultants do, SSE can usually provide tank removal services for hundreds of dollars less than what our competitors charge. In addition, we don't allow our subcontractor to excavate beyond what is necessary to get clean closure (see below).

On jobs where no leakage ocurred, SSE adds $750 to the subcontracted costs, for site supervision and the report. When soil remediation is necessary, the State Trust Fund covers our costs, and SSE feels that what the Fund allows the consultant for project management, field supervision, sampling, and report preparation is gracious plenty, so we don't markup the non-reimbursable costs the way some consultants do.
How much will it cost to remove my UST?
BEWARE of low-ball quotes!

Owning, insuring, mobilizing, operating, and maintaining excavation equipment is very costly. USTs cannot be removed and disposed of for free. Some consultants have been known to offer tank removal services at an unbelievably low cost, with the intent of making up their "loss" by excavating more soil than was necessary.
