Tank Removal & Soil Cleanup
SSE's clients pay an average of about $2,000 to remove a UST, and dispose of the tank and any fluids and sludge.

SSE does not own or maintain any excavation equipment, nor do we employ any equipment operators. With no overhead, and because we do not markup subcontracted work as many consultants do, SSE can usually provide tank removal services for hundreds of dollars less than what our competitors charge.

SSE charges only for preparing a report on jobs where no leakage ocurred (included in the cost of removal, still averaging about $2,000 per tank removed). When soil remediation is

BEWARE of Low-ball Quotes! Owning, insuring, mobilizing, operating, and maintaining excavation equipment is very costly. USTs cannot be removed and disposed of for free. Some consultants have been known to offer tank removal services at an unbelievably low cost, with the intent of making up their "loss" by excavating more soil than was necessary, which is where the money is. REALTORS, if the company you rely on has been excavating close to the maximum amount of contaminated soil on more than 50% of their jobs (residential tanks), then chances are they may be "over-doing it." SSE has obtained clean closure on the majority of our jobs by excavating an average of about 25 to 30 tons of impacted soil (State allows a maximum of 57 tons before the consultant must seek approval to dig more).
Most home heating oil USTs are non-regulated, which means
that they do not have to be removed, unless leakage is discovered.
The most common method for site remediation is the physical removal of the contaminated soils, which should always be done at the time of tank removal. We typically finish the tank removal, excavating activities, and backfilling and site restoration in one day. The contaminated soils are transported to a permitted disposal facility on the same day. We try to avoid disturbing the landscape as much as possible, but tank removal is a messy process (no complaints so far). If the UST has not leaked, and/or the concerned parties are in agreement, Sensible Solutions prefers to abandon the tank in-place to avoid disturbing the landscape. However, removal should be performed whenever possible.
necessary, the State Trust Fund usually covers the costs, and SSE feels that what the Fund allows the consultant for project supervision, sampling (time on site), and report preparation is gracious plenty, so we don't markup the non-reimbursable costs, the way many consultants do.
Some USTs, if installed on a thick bed of sand that provides adequate drainage, and if surrounded by sand so that the tank is not in contact with the more corrosive, native soils, can come out of the ground looking like new, even many years after having been installed.
